Dear Parents,
Just a reminder that our class will be taking a Field Trip to the Cobb County Safety Village tomorrow, March 31st! Please send your child to school in his/her lime green class t-shirt and PE shoes! If you have lost your class shirt, please do your best to wear lime green/green shirt, just to help us "spot" our owls! Also, if you are planning on sending your child to school with his/her lunch, please send in labeled, disposable bags, so that we can accommodate all of our lunches in a cooler!
We will be leaving school around 9:15 and arriving back at East Side at 1:45. Students are in for a GREAT experience, learning all kinds of safety tips and accident prevention strategies. I hope they learn a lot and have fun!
I will actually be absent from school tomorrow and Friday, as baby Joshua will be having some eye surgery! Our class will be left in very capable, substitute hands! That being said, I hope that all of your families will have a wonderful, safe, and relaxing Spring Break! I look forward to seeing all of the Outstanding Owls back in April for our last few weeks together before summer!

Wednesday Wrap-Up
Dear Parents,
I'm so happy to have all of our little owls back in the room from February Break to learn, grow, and play! Here are a few announcements for the week:
I'm so happy to have all of our little owls back in the room from February Break to learn, grow, and play! Here are a few announcements for the week:
- Friday Math Lab Game Day: Our class was the MOST WELL BEHAVED mathematicians in the Math Lab for the 2nd quarter! Mrs. Slayton is rewarding our class with game time in the Math Lab this Friday from 8:00-8:45! She is allowing students to bring games of their choice from home to play. Only rule is no electronics!
- The International Festival is this Saturday, February 27th! Please get your tickets and plan on joining the fun from 2:00-5:00 at school!
- Jump Rope for Heart begins during PE next week! Please make sure your child wears his/her PE shoes and is ready to jump, jump, jump!
- Moon Observation Calendars came home today with students! Students are being asked to track the changes in the moon over the next month! This should take just a few minutes each night! This assignment correlates to our science standards requiring students to study the pattern of the Earth's phases throughout a full cycle! Please help your child fill in his/her calendar each night!
- In math, we're working very hard on adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers. Aside from just solving these problems, students are also requited to explain their strategy to solve in specific, detailed writing! Students should be able to: 1.) Name their chosen strategy 2.) Use relevant, specific math vocabulary (add, subtract, hundreds, tens, ones, decompose, partial sums, sum, difference, etc.) and 3.) Use transition words to connect their writing (First, next, then, finally, etc.) Please see the pictures below to "see" the strategies were're working on and an example of a written explanation of an addition problem solved in class!

Monday News!
Dear Parents,
Hope those interested enjoyed the Super Bowl last night! We had some sleepy owlets fly in this morning...they said staying up a little later than usual to watch parts of the game had them worn out!

Discovery Quest Presentations are THIS WEEK:
Don't forget that your child was assigned a day this week to prepare and present his/her Discovery Quest Presentations! These presentations are for a grade, so preparation is important! There will be no spelling this week, to allow for extra practice opportunities! If you are missing directions, the Discovery Quest Planning Sheet (due on the day of your child's presentation), or any other information about these project, please check under the Homework Resources Tab!
Scholastic Book Orders:
Our class can earn bonus points towards new books for any orders placed on or before February 29th! If your child is in need of some new reading material, we would love for you to order some books from our Scholastic Book Class Link: https://clubs2.scholastic.com and use our class code: LRJMC.
Teacher Appreciation Week Donations:
We need raffle prizes for Teacher Appreciation week. Do you own a business or have an unused gift card from the holidays? Please consider donating these as well as any other new items and gift cards to Teacher Appreciation week to be given to teachers in a raffle at the luncheon. Items can be dropped off at the Front Office anytime before February 11th. Let's show the best teachers in Cobb County just how much we appreciate them!!
Student Council is having a Valentine’s Day fundraiser Tuesday, February 9th to Friday, February 12th. Students will be selling candy grams and a card for $1.00 from 7:20-7:50 inside the cafeteria. Students are able to buy a candy gram for their friends, family, and/or teachers. Student Council will then deliver those cards to the students or teachers that same morning. Thank you for supporting East Side’s Student Council.
The International Festival will be held this year at East Side Elementary on Saturday, Feb. 27 from 3-5pm. This fun family event will feature food and cultural performances from all over the world. Ticket order forms have been sent home with students. Please return form and payment in an envelope marked PTA in order to get the pre-order price per ticket of $7. If you need a ticket order form, extras are located in the school mailroom or a form can be emailed to you.
There are many ways in which you can participate to help to make it a success. Please consider signing up at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/70a0b4da5ab22a31-international to be a country representative, performer, help with set up or clean up. More information on the different volunteering opportunities can be found here as well.

Happy 100th Day and News from the Computer Lab

Happy New Year!
Our New Year Resolution in the computer lab is to become better
typists. Typing is a common core standard. The foundation helped
the computer lab invest in speedskins to help improve our typing skills. We
want to thank the foundation for their help in meeting our goal.
We are beginning the new year working with the new skins in 3rd
thru 5th grade. Kindergarten thru 2nd grade are working on improving
typing skills before moving onto the use of skins in the older grades.

We are having a GREAT week in second grade! Please check out the announcements below and the information about what we've been doing in class!
Welcome:
A warm Outstanding Owls welcome goes out to the Russell family! The Russells moved to Marietta
a few weeks ago and joined our class! Their daughter has been the perfect addition to our class family, and we are so excited to have them!
Lunch Change:
This Friday we are changing our lunch time. This Friday, January 15th, we'll be eating lunch from 12:03-12:33. If you would like to have lunch with us that day, please be sure to come at the different time!

East Side STEM night is coming soon! Tuesday, January 26th
and Wednesday, January 27th from 6-7:30.We will break up the two
nights alphabetical by last name (A-L) on the 26th, and (M-Z) on the
27th. Bring the entire family there will be 10 fun activities
including engineering, robotics, coding, and more! Uncle Maddio’s will have pizza
dinner here for you to purchase. Flyer will be coming home soon!!
Social Studies:
We've started learning all about Civil Rights and the contributions that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. made to the Civil Rights Movement! Students are fascinated by this time in history and have loved making a flip book all about Dr. King!
Writing Workshop:
We started last week writing some goals we had for the New Year! Then, we jumped right into learning the difference between facts and opinions. We read the book Duck! Rabbit! and formed opinion paragraphs supporting our stance on whether the main character was in fact a duck or a rabbit!
Math:
We've been hard at work learning how to identify coins/bills and count combinations of money! This is a challenging skill, so we'll be working on it for the next several weeks!
Reading:
The class LOVES reading folk tales and fairy tales--there are so many new versions of traditional tales we've been studying! We're keeping track of the story elements we find as readers, and we're learning to make connections to the characters!

Dear Parents and Owls,
Here's a peek at what we've been doing in class!
Word Study: Our spelling pattern this week is all about the suffixes -er and -est! We use the suffix -er to mean "a person who does" AND "more" when comparing two things! We use -est to mean "most" when comparing more than two things. You can find a copy of our weekly spelling rule and sight words under our homework tab!
Social Studies: We've been learning all about the beginning of the Georgia colony and how James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, and Mary Musgrove helped to create what is now Georgia! We made flipbooks all about each important figure from history! A study guide about this information came home with students today AND can be found under homework resources!
Reading: We've been learning all about nonfiction text features. Students have learned now to use the table of contents, headings, subheadings, photographs, and captions to dig deeper into nonfiction text!
Math: In math, we're working on problem solving. Students are working on single-step word problems involving numbers 0-100 and two-step problems involving numbers 0-20. Here's how we've been modeling our problems:
We are busy learning and growing! Our parliament of owls is so smart and hard-working! Let's have another AWESOME week!

- Friday Events: Tomorrow, Friday, November 13 will be Smoothie Sale Day in the Cafe from 7:20-7:50. Muffins with Mavity will be held in the cafe at 8:30!
- Thanksgiving Rotations: We are having Thanksgiving rotations next Friday, November 20th from 8:45-10:30. Meredith Doyle has volunteered to be one of our parent volunteers, but we would love to have at least one more! If you are able to assist, please e-mail Mrs. Kidd!
- Scholastic Book Fair is NEXT WEEK: “The Scholastic Book Fair starts Monday November 16th! There will be thousands of books to choose from. We would love to give students from our sister school Fair Oaks the opportunity to enjoy these wonderful books. Please consider supporting our One 4 Books campaign to raise funds to send books to Fair Oaks by sending loose change and small donations to school throughout this week. Family Night at the Book Fair will be Tuesday November 17th from 6 to 8pm. There will be face painting, tattoos, and more! A ‘monstrous’ time will be had by all! Check the Media Center blog for hours and additional information.”
- Georgia Parent Survey: The Georgia Parent Survey is also modeled after the student survey and contains 24 questions. Parents may complete the survey using their personal computer, smartphones or tablet. For parents that do not have access to the Internet, school administrators should consider scheduling dates and times to allow parents to complete the Georgia Parent Survey at school. All parents should be encouraged to participate in the Georgia Parent Survey because the data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. Individual data results from the Georgia Parent Survey will not be available to the public and will not be posted online. The URL address for the Georgia Parent Survey is posted below.
